Pagerank is the general algorithm of Google which ranks a site on the basis of its back links. In fact the main element of allocating a Pagerank to any webpage is the number of sites linking to the webpage and their own Pagerank value. PageRank is but one of perhaps 100 different factors which Google may use to determine exactly where your listing will appear in a given search. That’s all that matters, top 10-20 placement in a search. PageRank is displayed on the Google toolbar and in the Google directory . The toolbar PR is a scale with 10 steps, while the directory PR is a scale with 7 steps.
PageRank is a “rank” for a website and ranges from zero to ten (0 - 10). You will notice that high respected websites have a higher PageRank assigned whereas new websites will have a lower PageRank. PageRank is Google`s way of deciding a page`s importance. It matters because it is one of the important factors that determines a page`s ranking on the search results. PageRank is just one of the many factors Google takes into account when calculating the ranking for your Website. And it’s not the most important one.
The higher the PageRank value the better chance it gets a higher position in Google’s search results. PageRank is a “vote”, by all other pages on the Web telling Google how important a particular page is. It is one of the parameters of search engine ranking.
Google calculates a page’s importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page’s PageRank is calculated. Google advises webmasters to use the nofollow HTML attribute value on sponsored links. According to Matt Cutts, Google is concerned about webmasters who try to game the system, and thereby reduce the quality of Google search results. Google’s PageRank algorithm stages a monthly popularity contest among all pages on the web to decide which pages are most important. The fundamental idea put forth by PageRank’s creators, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page, is this: the importance of a page is judged by the number of pages linking to it as well as their importance.
Adding new content is key to the success of any site: sites grow almost entirely based on their content. More content means more links, more traffic, more time spent on your site, etc.
